The Grill’d Story

The Grill’d concept delivers a new, fresh and vibrant approach to what is arguably the most widely appealing food concept in the world – the burger. The Grill’d concept was born when Simon Crowe, the company founder, decided to do something about the lack of a decent, healthy hamburger in the Australian market.

Crowe, who has always wanted to have his own business, witnessed the rise of the premium burger phenomenon while living overseas & has taken what he believes to be the positive attributes of many operations and given it “more than a splash of our own”.

The first Grill’d store opened in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn in March 2004, offering quality, fresh, healthy, meal-sized burgers made from 100% beef, chicken breast, lamb and veggie patties. Grill’d offers in-store dining and take-away and is open for lunch and dinner. Part of the Grill’d experience is watching the delicious, made-to-order burgers being cooked on the flame grill and ‘dressed’ with fresh ingredients.

Grill’d is positioned as the friendly, local specialist burger bar with a healthy bent. The Grill’d business model is that of a company owned and franchised operation, capitalising on consumer demand for healthy, great tasting and convenient meal solutions.

The overwhelming response to the first store led to the quick succession of three additional stores in the Melbourne suburbs of Malvern (Glenferrie Rd), St Kilda (Acland St) & Windsor (Chapel St).

The success of the concept has led to the decision to franchise the business, an exciting move that will allow Grill’d to establish itself as Australia’s Number 1 premium, healthy burger chain. Crowe, together with business partners Simon McNamara and Geoff Bainbridge, is looking forward to taking the concept to new markets, starting in popular shopping strips followed by bigger shopping centres.

Menu

The Grill’d menu offers a wide range of delicious, healthy beef, lamb, chicken and vegetarian burgers for the whole family. All burgers are made with love from the highest quality, freshest ingredients. Our patties contain no preservatives and are low in fat. The beef and lamb patties blend lean, Australian meat with our signature tomato relish and selected natural herbs. The Mighty Melbourne is the most popular Grill’d beef burger!

Grill’d chicken burgers use only premium grilled chicken breasts trimmed of all fat, while our veggie burgers are made to our recipe by a vegetarian specialty producer and supplied exclusively to Grill’d. There is a traditional veggie pattie, a tofu pattie and a chickpea pattie, all of which contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. They are suitable for vegans and contain only organic soy and non-GMO ingredients.

There are 2 types of buns available – panini or traditional. Grill’d buns are baked daily and are low in sugar.

Grill’d chips are the perfect accompaniment to any burger and come in regular and snack size. Grill’d chips are cooked in cholesterol free cottonseed oil. Once cooked, they are sprinkled with the famous Grill’d herb mix and shaken with sea salt.

Customers can choose between three delicious complementary dipping sauces – Grill’d herbed mayo, tomato relish or sweet chilli mayo.

Becoming a Grill’d Franchise Partner
If you were to be granted a Grill’d franchise, you can anticipate total establishment costs of between $300,000 to $410,000, dependent on factors such as store size, and requirements of the selected site. In addition, there will be an ongoing Royalty and Marketing levy based on a percentage of your store’s income.

Grill’d recognises that the decision to operate a franchise business is a serious one, requiring significant investment, and we take our commitment to maximising the likelihood of franchisee success very seriously. We have worked closely with Deacons Consulting, widely regarded as the experts in franchising, in the preparation of our franchising model. Grill’d also intends to join the Franchise Council of Australia.
